The COIPA ENERGY green hydrogen project in Mauritania is an ambitious initiative aimed at harnessing 10,000 hectares of land for the sustainable production of green hydrogen. COIPA ENERGY will act as a shareholder of the SPV Project Company for the renewable hydrogen and ammonia production project, with a total value of 2.5 billion dollars, which will be built near Nouakchott, Mauritania. This project represents a significant step towards global energy transition, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and promoting the use of renewable energy sources.

Project Objectives

  1. Clean Energy Production: Generate green hydrogen using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.
  2. Environmental Sustainability: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote eco-friendly practices.
  3. Economic Development: Create jobs and stimulate the local economy through investments in green infrastructure.
  4. Technological Innovation: Implement advanced technologies for water electrolysis and hydrogen storage.

Project Components

  1. Solar and Wind Plants: Installation of solar panels and wind turbines to generate the necessary energy for green hydrogen production. By 2027, 0.6 GW of wind and solar power will drive the production of more than 40,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year or over 0.22 million tonnes per year of renewable ammonia.
  2. Electrolysis Units: Use of electrolyzers to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.
  3. Storage and Distribution: Secure storage systems for the produced hydrogen and infrastructure for its distribution.

Project Progress

All major subcontracts for Pre-FEED engineering of the NHtree Project are being awarded, and the final investment decision (FID) will be made in the first quarter of 2025.

Meeting and Agreement Signing for the Hydrogen Production Development Project with Nani Ould Chrougha, Minister of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines, Mauritania.

Project Benefits

  1. Renewable Energy: Contributes to the production of clean, renewable energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
  2. Emission Reduction: Helps reduce CO2 emissions and other air pollutants.
  3. Innovation and Development: Promotes technological innovation and the development of new skills in the renewable energy sector.
  4. Positive Economic Impact: Stimulates the local economy through job creation and investment opportunities.
The Mauritanian Government has approved and designated an area of 100 km² (10,000 hectares) for the green hydrogen project.

Challenges and Solutions

  1. Infrastructure: Development of adequate infrastructure for the production, storage, and distribution of hydrogen.
  2. Funding: Attraction of investments and financing to support the project.
  3. Regulations: Adapting to local and international regulations regarding renewable energy and safety.
  4. Training: Training the local workforce to manage and maintain the new technologies.

The COIPA ENERGY green hydrogen project spanning 10,000 hectares in Mauritania represents a significant opportunity to advance the global energy transition while simultaneously promoting local economic development and environmental sustainability. With careful planning and targeted investment support, this project has the potential to become a successful model for similar initiatives worldwide.
